Founded in 1997, the Communications Regulators' Association of Southern Africa harmonises ICT and Postal regulation across 14 sovereign member states.
Who we are
Cooperation across borders, harmonisation across sectors
CRASA is the Specialized Agency of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) responsible for communications and postal regulation. We bring together National Regulatory Authorities from across the region to develop common positions, share knowledge, and shape regulatory frameworks for the digital age.
Our work spans spectrum management, roaming policy, broadband development, postal services modernisation, consumer protection, and emerging technology including 5G, IoT, and digital financial services. The goal is straightforward: make regulation work for the 350 million people across SADC, and the businesses that serve them.

Our story
Three decades of regional cooperation
From a 1997 founding initiative to a Specialized Agency of SADC, CRASA's evolution mirrors the region's communications transformation.

1997
Foundation
The Telecommunications Regulators' Association of Southern Africa (TRASA) is established to coordinate telecommunications regulation across SADC member states.

2006
Expansion to ICT
TRASA is renamed the Communications Regulators' Association of Southern Africa (CRASA) to reflect the convergence of telecommunications, broadcasting, and postal services into a unified ICT framework.

2011
SADC Specialized Agency
CRASA is formally recognised as a Specialized Agency of SADC, operating under the SADC Treaty and the Protocol on Transport, Communications and Meteorology.

2018
Postal sector integration
Formal expansion to incorporate Postal regulation alongside ICT, reflecting the broader convergence of communications services and the strategic importance of postal networks for digital and financial inclusion.

Driving digital transformation
CRASA leads regional initiatives on 5G deployment, digital financial inclusion, cybersecurity coordination, postal modernisation, and harmonised consumer protection across the 14-state region.

Annual General Meeting
